On February 28, 2022, Ukraine formally applied for membership in the European Union (EU). The European Council recognized Ukraine as a candidate country on June 17, 2022.

The EU has consistently supported Ukraine's aspirations for EU membership. In response to Ukraine's application, the European Commission issued an opinion on June 17, 2022, recommending that Ukraine be granted candidate status.

Negotiations and Timeline

EU leaders have emphasized that Ukraine's EU accession is a long-term goal. The start date for negotiations is yet to be determined, as it depends on Ukraine meeting certain political, economic, and legal criteria.
