Football Overtime Rules in the NFL

Regular Season and Playoffs

In the regular season and playoffs, overtime is a 10-minute period. The team that wins the coin toss gets to choose whether to possess the ball first or defer to the second half. The team that possesses the ball first gets four downs to score a touchdown or field goal. If the team scores a touchdown, the game is over. If the team踢a field goal, the other team gets a chance to possess the ball. If the other team scores a touchdown, the game is over. If the other team kicks a field goal, the game goes into a second overtime period.

The second overtime period is also a 10-minute period. The team that did not possess the ball first in the first overtime period gets to possess the ball first in the second overtime period. The rules for the second overtime period are the same as the rules for the first overtime period.

If the game is still tied after the second overtime period, the game goes into sudden death overtime. In sudden death overtime, the first team to score a touchdown or field goal wins the game.

The Pro Bowl is the NFL's all-star game. The rules for overtime in the Pro Bowl are different than the rules for overtime in the regular season and playoffs. In the Pro Bowl, overtime is a 15-minute period. The team that wins the coin toss gets to choose whether to possess the ball first or defer to the second half. The team that possesses the ball first gets four downs to score a touchdown or field goal. If the team scores a touchdown, the game is over.
